Thirsty for a new sunrise in Valtellina, Italy
Pink clouds and snow frame the Bernina Express train at dawn Bernina Pass, Canton of Graubünden, Engadine, Switzerland, Europe
I was very surprised when, standing on Cima Belvedere while admiring a fantastic sunrise in Dolomites, an orange light drew its way towards peaks and valleys, creating a unique situation. I decided a zoom composition with telelens, this is the result. Hope you'll like it.
And then comes a moment you feel good taking pictures at home.
Abbazia di Vallate, august '16
After some months of travels around Europe and italian cities im finally back to mountains, this time in the less known area of Trentino Dolomites: Brenta! In these days i had opportunity to try the new series of Ray Masters Camera Filters set and of course the brand new ND1000. After two years of partnership with Slovakian producers brand, I can say that a lot improvements led this company among the best producers of filters in the world. We can see the quality level in this shot, taken during sunrise.. Im very satisfied for the total absence of dominant, even with an added gnd 8 soft. Thank you Roman and Jaro !!

A nice awakening in Switzerland
There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you...

A pink sunset from my seasonal favourite location, Engadin. That day, in company of a strange spider!
Ice, train and sunset, exactly what i was looking for!
It was a great autumn in the Alps, great contrasts all over different mountains elevations. After a warm summer first snow cames, then a ten days of very cold nights transformed the landscapes, I tried to capture the essence of this beauty, hope you'll like it!
Every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn.
Soglio, a settlement nestled in the mountains of the canton of Graubünden near the Italian border, has been named Switzerland’s most beautiful village of the year.
In fact this is from many years one of my favourite location where to spend daily photo-excursions for the official tourism board. I'm very happy to accompany with my photos this important result obtained by Bregaglia Valley.
Furcella de Furcia, view towards Alta Badia, Odle, Dolomites.

A stormy sunset from St.Moritz mountains, Switzerland.
This is an italian unusual view of famous Matterhorn, emerging from the clouds during a lucky autumnal sunrise in Aosta Valley.
Ok, I am finally going to be inspired from thundery situations!
I would not have bet on a great sunset yesterday, but finally I was ready, in the right place, under the rain, saving new emotions in the adventures book!
Hope you'll enjoy.
After few attempts in this exclusive alpine location, I reached my goal to admire an interesting sunrise at Stellisee, in the Zermatt mountains.
I am very happy for the friends of my photo workshop that spent there a very cold night below zero!

Can we put a very large object into a much smaller one?
Ardez, in the canton of Graubünden, is my favourite town of the lower Engadin valley. This morning I started from St.Moritz, driving 50km, to chase the best light. This is my first shot with Canon 5Ds, ... nice beginning!
Wind, sun, silence, rocks ... a super show from the simplest things!
I'm back again to Santa Magdalena, trying to capture "my" famous cherry tree on a different season. Have a look at this shot... which one do you like more?

Sunrise reflection of Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Monte Paterno, Dolomites, Italy.
I'm back to Funes where I realized my famous "Symbol of South Tyrol"... but this time I prefer to hike a little to reach a good position where to admire Odle mountains.
I enjoy a colorful sunrise from one of his "alm", one of the best in Dolomites.
Funes Valley I think is the most impressive location to admire Dolomites, especially in autumn when cherrys trees give show to photographers and nature lovers.
No matter the alarm clock, no matter cold, no matter effort, what is more important is to breathe the transition from dark to light, hear the spring ice creaking behind me whispering to be careful, feel the scent of trees preparing the summer, finally be there, 100 years after Mr. Segantini with his "Lake Cavaloccio the morning".
Mountains always teach you many things, so I hope one day to come back here with my children.
Would you like to be there?
This shot to show you beauty of the mountains, the simplicity of a reflection during a sunrise at Lake Chesery, France.
Nice light during the sunrise in the Haute Savoie alps, this unique alpine lake stunning panorama is not far from Chamonix, we can easily identify Mont Blanc, highest peak in Europe. I climbed it more than ten years ago, but I remember as today the effort to bring my ass on the summit!
Spring is coming in the alps but in the higher altitude there is something very different instead of beautiful flowerings in the green meadows. I go searching for thaws, unique situations, everytime different cracks in the surfaces and different shapes to use in the foreground. For the summer we can wait long here!
Maybe you can think I am crazy, but i would like landscapes like this more frequently during the year! I love icy situations and, if hell is as hot as the legend says, I hope we we will meet in a very cold heaven!
Oeschinensee in Swiss canton of Berner Oberland is one of the most scenic landscape of the Alps. Sometimes what you remember of a photo is not exactly the beautiful sunny day that we can admire in the picture, but how I had to fight all night long with thunder and lightning locked inside my vulnerable tent.
Alpenglow on the highest peaks of the Alps seen from the Aiuguilles Rouges national park, France.
I finally got the photo with the train. This is what I would have liked to do, the first morning train with a nice sunset coming. After some attempts this is the best shot I can show you for this beautiful mountain subject, an icon for Switzerland.
A panoramic shot from Cima Campedelle to the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo during a soft sunrise at the end of the autumn.
This panoramic photography has been one of the most beautiful sunsets of 2014.
I think that these situations are the hardest moments for landscape photographers, we must be quick to find a valid composition with an important foreground or elsewhere we will not show on the frame a result equal to the Nature's spectacle.
Although I have traveled a lot in recent years, perhaps, the most exciting moment, is just next to home.
I love seasonal changes in mountains, after twenty years of hike and photography I know they are for me the most interesting moments to find out the perfect landscape. No matter if I often return in the same locations, I know that every time will be like the first one, a huge spectacle is waiting for the hikers to pay off the efforts of the walk.
Today I post a shot taken on Christmas Eve where it seems that nature wanted to give me a puzzle as Christmas gift!
This shot is a part of a longer panorama composed by 7 frames in vertical.
Suddenly a beam of light illuminates in red the leaden sky above Carezza Lake in Dolomites... quickly I search for an appropriate composition and I prepare camera and filters to capture this unexpected spectacle... just two minutes then blue hour begins... like a caress.
Once again I wonder in front of a new Mountain show!
All around me there is a silent peace in this slowly dawn, I join this moment sitting down on the ice, looking to the drawns in the surface of the lake.
I wish you a happy new year with this recent shot taken in Dolomites with friends photographers Iurie Belegurschi and Christian Lim.
A difficult shot because to realize this, during the sunset, I had to enter directly into the icy river of Val Venegia, not far from Passo Rolle. Three shots merged, 30'' each with GND filters and polar, to realize this 1:1 frame.
One of the most intense sunrise I have seen in mountain. Just a couple of days before the ice in the foreground was a beautiful pool, perfect to reflect the panorama, but, as we can see, the cold winter changed and transformed the alpine landscape!
In these days I went more times in Switzerland with the goal to photograph the Bernina Express Unesco train during sunrise. I would like to take a photo with the train passing during blue hour with all the lights on inside the train, I have only a possibility during the year, the month of December. This is the final result.
I sometimes go in this location of the Swiss Alps.
Every time the nature gives me a new emotion.
I think that the pursuit of detail is essential in photography, it seems that nature wants to hide its best of from the most popular trails.
I close this intense photographic year with a shot that is a tribute to photography and to my lovely mountains. A dangerous and very difficult shot, composed of 5 vertical shots during a cold sunrise at Berninapass, Switzerland.
Merry Christmas to everyone.
It's a very windy and cold day in the Alps, I am preparing myself to spend some hours here taking pictures in what will be an unforgettable night sky.
Some snow wind-transported patterns suggest me to stop here for the sunset, so I use the perfect sunburst of my wide angle to warm a little those waves in front of me. Temperature is going down, will I survive all night outside in company of a minus twenty degrees? I will show you with the next shot!
Val di Funes, South Tyrol, waiting for the last rays of light.
The icy silence of a November morning its everywhere around me, in the background the warm colors of the sun embrace peaks and clouds giving to the scene a beautiful contrast.
Sometimes beauty is next to home, in this case it has been enough to take advantage of the amazing result of floods to take advantage of a favorable sunset.
We have not reached astronomical winter yet, but in fact at 2000 meters, in the alps, landscape is already going to the season of the great cold. Frost begins to suffocate my beloved lakes. I try to greet them with this new shot while their surface suffocates under a colorful sunrise.
Autumn colors ready, landscape ready, sunset ready!

My way of living mountain is sometimes represented as a race against time, between night and day, making my way away from the paths, between ledges and steep gullies. I wake up early, even at 2 or 3 in the night and it could be that I am going back home when the world is still sleeping. Sometimes I go back very happy, in most of the occasions a little less. Mountain is sever, the weather is mainly bad.
But the effort doesnt count, it serves to strengthen us.
In this photo nature was hiding a nice gift for my birthday. I want to share it with you, to thank you for your great affection... and now I can dream for a new sunrise.
Sunset at the White Lake on Mont Avic Natural Park, Valle d'Aosta.
A photographer is engaged in capturing the beautiful soft colors on the glaciers of Monte Rosa range.
This is my favourite shot taken on the summer of 2014.
I always dreamed to go to Canada one day, I would like to be there for one time, at sunset, facing some breathtaking scenery. But... a day, I was surprised and very much inspired from a place I found on Google Earth: it was Switzerland, but it was very similar to a Canadian postcard.
Finally, I studied the area, trekking possibilities, direction of the light.. and I went with a friend in that incredible place looking for some excitement... here's the result.

Serendipity means a "fortunate happenstance" or "pleasant surprise".
I think this shot is the most appropriate from my archive if I would like to search out a shot that best represent this mysterious and ancient term.
I was on the banks of an alpine lake above Col del Nivolet, admiring the majestic beauty of Gran Paradiso (4061 meters) when an unbelivable twilight was accompanying me to an unforgettable night!
Did you ever took the most beautiful vacation shot just at the moment when it would have been better to run away from there?
Lac de Chesery, Chamonix - Haute-Savoie alps, France.
This shot is a tribute to the beauty of my valley, Valtellina.
Sometimes happens to me to find it in rare and exceptional situations. It's an honor for me to be a photographer because I can show to people what I can admire.
When I saw that heart on the wall of the wood cabin, I immediately thought to this idea in my head. The shot come from a daily winter hike with snowshoes on a alpine location in the Swiss Bregaglia Valley. The sun was going down so I asked my friend to pass there. But the problem was I had to enter in that house... ops... here finish my story!
Villnoess (Val di Funes) is a beautiful place to visit in every seasons but I think once in your life you must admired this valley in its autumn dress. I know Alps better than my pockets but I can say that this scenery is, perhaps, the one that leaves more breathtaking emotions than any other places I've been lucky enough to admire in these years of immense passion for photography and mountain.

A foggy sunrise at "Riserva Naturale del Pian di Gembro". A beautiful location to take some shots, the best moments are spring and autumn!
This is my first attempt with the new Sony ALpha 7R with a great lens I bought some days ago: Canon EF 28-300.
Eriophorum are one of the flowers I prefer to include in my summer shots. I found this nice blooms on a river near Col del Nivolet, Piedmont (Italy).
Most of the interest in this shot is played by the sequence of levels that accompany the observer to Levanna, the beautiful peaks in the background.
Breathtaking sunsets in mountains are a little rare. In my experience, with over 15 years of mountain photography I can say that we have no more than 10 to 20 incredibles sunsets per year. But when, sometimes, even in the Alps, we can assists to some pink lights show, we must be prepared, it's the hardest thing!
I often wonder: "what is a dream" ... sometimes happen to me to be in a dream, but with my eyes. Maybe, I can look for the answer in the destiny. I feel really lucky to assist at these breathtaking situations.
Every year I spent a sunrise at the Bernina Pass. Normally i go there in winter because I would like to capture the Bernina Unesco Red Train in all its beauty.
Its vibrant red contrasts dramatically with the white that dominates the landscape around the white lake.
In this shot I was lucky to be accompanied by a sunrise of a rare beauty, I therefore decided to leave the train in the background giving more importance to the colors of this magical dawn.
The night is gone, now comes the dawn. I would like to stay here forever, with this silent landscape that whispers to me the first 2014 tale.
Odle mountain range and the church of Santa Magdalena are the symbols of the Val di Funes. I choosed this postcard for a beautiful photography workshop in the Dolomites. This shot is taken at the sunrise, just after the sun goes down from the horizon respect my position, letting me capture the beautiful and natural colors of the wild cherry trees in contrast with the incredible green fields!

Every sunrise is a new speech, an emotion to be placed in the drawer of memories.
Sunrises are intense moments where you may need to be ready for a shot to remember, never miss the opportunity that may present us in front of our eyes.
I realized this shot in Dolomites, we can see Mount Paterno in the background. This is a 2,5 seconds of exposure-shot that let me capture a nice effect on the water surface.
These are the situations I love to meet in the mountains. Rays of colored light that paint, during the post-sunrise, the yellow autumn location preparing them for the winter.
This time, to embellish the scene, I decided to insert a human silhouette in the scene... it's me! I'm trying to convey to me this great morning light!
A strong wind is sweeping the snow fallen on the highest peaks of the group Masino-Bregaglia, between Switzerland and Italy.
The fierce movement recommend me to use a long exposure time when the first sunrise light paints the clouds, creating an interesting pattern into the sky.
A simple click from the home mountains.
Ready with my camera for another sunrise in the landscape of High Valtellina, where I move my steps and where my emotions chasing from time to time.
Here in the Italian Alps the best time to enjoy a good sunset is when the north wind pushes impetuous and clouds are still placed in the right place relative to the direction of the last sun rays.
Then it's up to the photographer to be ready and in position for the 10 minutes of glorious light. In this case I preferred to give up everything I had in the pot and I run towards my favorite church, unfortunately without the tripod.
The golden sunrise light has finished from a few minutes, so I decide to have a look around the lake, searching of some interesting compositions before continuing my daily trekking.
I found a beautiful waterfall, a little hidden, but also very dangerous to reach.
Nothing can stop me! So I decide to make "alpine waterfall" hanging on a wall with the equipment hooked to a natural, and very slippery, terrace!

A shot taken at the first light of the morning, with the sun illuminating only the tip of the snow-capped peak of the italian Rhaetian alps.

2 AM... the alarm sounds, I get up and drive to Valmalenco.
5 AM... after two hours walking I am finally in position, waiting for the sunrise light.
Tripod, Lee Filters, ND Filter, Polarizator and... a little bit of lucky allowed me to realize this shot with the beautiful contrast beetwen cold and warm tones.
Pizzo Cengalo and Pizzo Badile are two cathedrals of granite that from Bondasca valley (switzerland) soar into the sky at the border beetwen Switzerland and Italy. In this shot they are invaded by the sunset light in a windy day. In my experience I know that strong wind from north is very important for clear photography and give me more chance of coloured sunsets.
Autumn, with its yellowing meadows, is the perfect time to bring out the warm tones of the sun at sunrise and sunset. Choosing an ideal location is essential to achieve the desired goal. Programming the destination depending on the season, the position of the sun, the presence or absence of water reflecting surface, are points on which the photographer has to focus with the utmost attention.
The first time I saw Mont Blanc it was 20 years old and I was there to reach his summit. We ascent the top of Europe on a long journey of August, hiking and climbing in the glacier for more than 10 hours. We leaved Refuge Torino, in Italy, at midnight, direction Brenva Glacier. At 6 the sunrise reached us while we were climbing the imposing seracs between Mont Blanc du Tacul and Mont Maudit. Finally at midday we were on the summit, ready to come back home!
Now I am here again but with my camera and 15 years more on my shoulders!
As often happens in winter, I move my passes the day after a heavy snowfall.
So, after a good walk between soft white dunes, I am now in a paradise of snow. There is an incredible light, I'm trying to retain the last drop of warmth from the sun, sometimes in these moments it becomes difficult to suspend the emotions to try to make a reasoned shot.
This evening everything is violet in my city.
During sunrise and sunset I often go in search of views that enhance the colors and the clouds, so in my photos never fails some water. In this case I am on the banks of the river Adda, one of the major rivers of Italy. In the background the bridge of Ganda, a distant memory of the Roman past in northern Italy.
Engadine, Switzerland. On a cold dawn of January the sky launches its breath drawing a breathtaking scenery with pastelled colors.
Like many photographers, I love to hunt for sunsets.
The difficulties are to find the right situation and the right location. In many cases the difference in the result is made by the equipment, for this I advice to use Neutral Density filters to correct the marked difference in brightness between the shadow areas and reflective areas, like the sky and the water.
Overcome physical effort, win every altitude difference, running down dreaming of enjoying a beer, sleep out with a tent, enjoy the cold on the skin, admire the sky...
and then wait for another magical silent dawn.
"Tonight I started up early. I did not expect to find so much snow around me and all this bitter cold. The fatigue was so great to get to this viewpoint, but as often happens in the mountains, Nature has seen fit to reward my hard work".
In my photo-experience I love going in search for rare situations, as in this case, with an early snowfall that paints a colourful landscape. In addition, I want to get to the pond right when the ice is sinking its claws into the waters, which certainly is not repeated at the same time year after year. The reflection lasts a few days, then it will be winter again.
In a secluded location with respect to the resorts of the Aosta valley, the Natural Park of Mont Avic gives trekkers the opportunity to admire sceneries of rare beauty on the highest 4000 meter peaks of the Alps. In this shot, with the first floor occupied by the White Lake, we can lose our gaze through the majesty of the Monte Rosa's glaciers.
After departing in the middle of the night, a good "dawns hunter" chooses the destination for the correct exposure according to the sun direction. That morning was, in the end, a real shock revival!
Wind from the north, fresh snowfall of the previous days, autumn around the corner... the temptation is too strong! So at 4 a.m. I leave home and head to a destination designed for a long time. After a good hour’s walk I am to the goal, just as nature gives me another proof of his infinite beauty!
The last rays are blushing the top of the unique 4000 meter peak entirely in Italian territory: Gran Paradiso. The water from Lake Rosset, flowing down through the valley, creates a good plot into the landscape. So I decide to move among the stones in the panorama. The rest of the colour occurs due to a neutral density filter and offers me an unexpected scene.
A hiker admires the warm light of the sun illuminating Levanna and Grand Aiguille Rousse in Cozie Alps of Piedmont. The cold and the wind are enemies to defeat for those who want to capture unforgettable situations at high altitudes.

This is the most incredible sunset that my eyes as a photographer and nature lover have ever admired in 15 years of photos-mountaineering. We go back to 2003, I was just starting out with digital equipment... I propose again today with the tools of modern post-processing. Alpe Granda, Rhaetian Alps Valtellina.
Valmasino and its valleys are the reign of granite. I consider these landscapes one of the most spectacular views of the Alps. Valmasino has no peaks over 4000 meters but thanks to areal "Sentiero Roma" hiking trail the alpinist can soar at considerable altitudes. In this shot I tried to capture the signature of spiral clouds at sunset gently swaying over Punta Allievi in Valle di Zocca (Val di Mello natural park).
A cloudless sky does not usually offer unforgettable shots but in this case the lake Cheserys gave me the opportunity to capture that moment in the best way. Lac Cheserys, France - Haute Savoie - Aiguille Verte, Les Drus and Aiguille de Chardonnay.
A cloudy day in the mountains can become the ultimate weapon for the photographer. Here I'm waiting for the night to come in Cadini of Misurina (Dolomites) when the last rays of light offer me a unique moment.
