Explosion on Senja 25/04/2017

Every time I admire northern lights it looks like to be the first time. To feel like a baby, in front of these spectacles, is absolutely normal. Last winter given me incredible moments, with 10/10 nights with spots of aurora in the sky between Lyngen, Tromsoe, Senja, Abisko and Finnish lapland. 6000 km of pure green emotions.
Feel free to contact me if you are interested to join my photo tour in 2017.

Everytime I come back to Stetind it looks like to be there for the first time. You cant see him until you get out from the tunnel road and you turn back facing his majesty. Last summer my goal was to find out a different point of view, so I ascent through trees and one-meter high ferns, without any trace, until the forest that swallowed me ended and a granite terrace gave me this beautiful sight during midnight sun light.

A difficult question, in both cases a particular light that accompanies our journeys in the arctic. Maybe summer is perfect if you want to join nature and then spent some adventures on a trekking or climbing up some mountain, winter is unique for the magic extra-time of the long arctic nights, just avoid any problems with cold and sudden storms.

The Albula line, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, is a mountain railway passing through very interesting landscapes, rich of artworks of engineering, including for example the famous Landwasser Viaduct. The Albula line, with the neighboring Bernina line, was entered in 2008 in the list of UNESCO as examples of technically advanced management of the landscape in high mountains and narrow-gauge railways as the most spectacular in the world. The line is crossed by regional trains and the prestigious Bernina Express, an express train in the tourist service from Tirano to Chur.

Inspirational Norway 09/02/2015

Since before leaving Italy I had in mind this cityscape in the city of Svollvaer, Lofoten. This view is the classic from the port but the difference, beetwen the touristic shot and this one, is staying in a raised position used for the frame. It has been really fun negotiating with the Sir of the second floor... but finally, after some minutes of persuasive debate, he let me enter in his luxury apartment and allowed me to use his very photographic terrace! Down at the bridge my colleagues of photo travel have enjoyed that situation, between laughs and amazement.

Usually, when I travel, I start with scheduling it many months before the effective departure. Is very important to study everything about the area: the correct moment, the most interesting location, how the light affects in the scene and many other things. Kinderdijk Windmills 09/05/2014

Holland is mostly situated below sea level but the Dutch are very innovative when it comes to keeping the water at bay. The Dutch don’t notice any of this and that is thanks to modern systems that keeps the seawater level from flooding the land.
But in the past years the windmills were very important to prevent flooding of the land. One of the best conserved windmills in the world are in Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a unique collection of 19 authentic windmills. They are with no doubt a Dutch icon throughout the entire world.

But, If we have too many clouds disturbing the descent of the sun towards the horizon? Let's try increasing the exposure and creating images that may seem new forms of art.
In this photo for example I decided even to exaggerate, with eight minutes of shooting in B pose during daylight. The scene acquires charm and the uncommon effect increases the attractiveness of the photographed area.

Reflected Canal 18/04/2013

Henningsvær is one of the most famous tourist resorts of the Lofoten Islands in Norway. The small harbor, located south of the archipelago, was built on a group of small islands at the foot of a cliff overlooking the sea.
The channel in the picture, known as Heimsundet, is an open neck of water built againts the adverse weather conditions that may occur in the harbour.

Miscanti y Miñiques 11/04/2013

During my travel to Chile & Bolivia I visited many lagoons in the Andes. They are normally located in altitudes next to 4000 meters and from the land many perfect volcanos towering to the sky.
I think the most beautiful place I visited was the Miscanti y Miñiques lagoons, four lagoons that arise in the middle of a magical natural landscape, surrounded by mountains. These lakes have a particular form of heart and deep blue waters. I was there in winter, wind and cold was too much for a pic-nic!

The Fjords Light 08/04/2013

The Northern Light is not only the magical dance of the green music in the night  sky, there is something more to be admired and this light starts early in the morning.
I was in Lofoten from five days but I haven't had yet the chance to see the light of the sun. When I got up from my Rorbu bed in Henningsvaer (the Venice of the north) and I saw the sky, I thought it was a mirage!
Keep writing would be superfluous...

Henningsvaer 06/04/2013

Henningsvær is a fishing village in the Lofoten archipelago. It is located 20 kilometres from the town of Svollvaer on several small islands connected with many bridges to the land. This village is one of the most beautiful in Lofoten and thanks to its channels and water is called "The Venice of the North".

Northern Lights 02/04/2013

The sun is the author!
Thanks to its charged particles if we can admire the bright dancing lights known as aurora or northern lights. These lights are seen above the magnetic poles but exactly best seen in an irregularly shaped oval centred over each magnetic pole.
Auroral displays appear in many colours, green and pink are more common. Variations are due to the type of gas particles that are colliding with atmosphere, this process occurs about 60 miles above the earth. Red auroras, that can reach lower latitudes, are reported to be located up to 200 miles from earth.
The lights appear in many forms in incredibles spectacles.
Some studies explain a connection between the Northern Lights and sunspot activity, well known as 'solar wind'. Researchers have discovered that auroral activity is cyclic, peaking roughly every 11 years. 2013 was at the top of this cycle.
Areas that are not subject to 'light pollution" are the best places to watch for the lights. The long periods of darkness and the frequency of clear nights provide many good opportunities to watch the auroral displays, so winter of 2013 was the right year!

Rorbu in Reine 30/03/2013

Rorbu is a traditional type of seasonal house used by fishermen, but very useful also to include in a scenic photo! The buildings are built on land, but with the one end on poles in the water. They are very common in all the coasts of Norway and very diffuse on Lofoten. The original use of rorbu for fishing has diminished and now Its use has become a living-house for tourists.

The Red Silence 28/03/2013

The old church of Flakstad viewed over in silence the blue hour of the Nordland region in Lofoten. This is one of the most photographic location I found during my trip to Norway, but for a good shot I think is necessary to find out them during a particular moment. In my shot, for example, I was lucky to find them with a "gritty" sky or, maybe, why not trying with a coloured sunset? Maybe next time I will come back here I will look for some northern lights over the church, with some green and I will put my final sign to this postcard.

Reine Blue Hour 26/03/2013

Reine is the most attractive location in the Lofoten Islands, Norway. The natural environment in which it stands, nestled between mountains and sea, is a delight for a Nature lover. As a landscape photographer I was very lucky to visit it during a snowstorm. So, I waited for a moment of calm, and then I took this picture during blue hour, one of the moments of light I love much.

Green Fishes 23/03/2013

Lofoten is an archipelago (although known with the name of “Lofoten islands”) in the county of Nordland in Norway.
They are surely famous for their breathtaking views between mountains and sea, but one of the factors that make them famous in the world is the exportation of stockfish thanks to the numerous cod fisheries. Expecially in winter, travelling through the fjords, will be easier to meet the dried cod rather than people.
Often, this show, is even enhanced by the presence of the Fox's Tail in the sky.

Let it Snow 21/03/2013

Nusfjord is one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved fishing village in Lofoten, protected from UNESCO since 1975.
I visited this village during a snowy winter season and in this shot I have succeeded very well to transmit this atmospheric situation.
No people or turists where there that day and it seemed to live in a ghost town. In the past this location was an important place of manufacture of cod on an industrial scale.

Secret Lofoten 18/03/2013

In this shot, from the Lofoten Islands in Norway, I tried to use in my favor a very bad and difficult weather situation. I am immersed in the sea with my legs up to the thigh and while I was trying to fight with the stability of the tripod I have been assailed by continuous tumultuous waves. Due to this, I care a lot for this shot and I also tried to rediscover one of the most remote and secret location of Lofoten, the beach of Unstad.

Quiet of Crystal 15/03/2013

When shooting at the landscape we must keep in mind some factors of success: a good light in the scene (better if you shoot at sunrise or sunset), find out a very interesting scenery, go to that place after studying the proper season, good equipment and appropriate filters. After these notes I want to focus on the concept of hyperfocal, an important factor that determines the success of your photos.
So you will just need to focus your lens at the hyperfocal distance and everything in the photograph from some near distance to infinity will be sharp. There are many software and online guides for this topic, spend some of your time in this and your time will be well spent.

KP4 Aurora 14/03/2013

Located in the Troms region, along the Norwegian fjords, the small town of Svensby is a good place to wait for an auroral storm. Just wait for a good geomagnetic activity and then choose from shooting to the sea or to the mountains, the Lyngen Alps.
I normally check out the KP index prediction, I can know if there is a good chance to see aurora. This index determines the global geomagnetic storm in a scale from  0 to 9. The higher the Kp climbs, the closer the lines move towards the equator.

Laguna Colorada 23/02/2013

Laguna Colorada is a shallow salt lake in Bolivia, located in the famous plateau in the South Region Lopez. The whole area is photogenic, but this lake in particular thanks to the contrasting colors on its surface. Red is caused by red sediments and pigmentation of some algae. Remember we are at 4200 meters, so it is best to go with a good train that goes in the high altitudes and gear up for the cold!

Namibia Kookerboom 07/12/2012

I am travelling along the dusty roads of southern Namibia early in the morning when I suddenly come across with what I'm looking for, a beautiful forest of kookerboom standing out as big skeletons in the landscape that anticipates the Kalahari Desert. The quiver tree or "Kokerboom" is one of the most interesting and characteristic plants of the very hot and dry parts of southern Namibia.
Every day a new emotion in this country!

Inca Salt Workers 25/10/2012

In the Urubamba Valley, not far from the city of Cusco, there are the famous "salt works" near the village of Maras. In the salt pans, local workers extract day after day bags of salt targeting to the Peruvian market. The spectacular terrain and the peculiarities of the place gave me the opportunity to make this shot in 2007 during my trekking from Cusco to Machu Picchu. I waited before taking the passage of this guy so that his shape corresponded with one of the pools of salt.
