It's all about the light.
Unstad, Lofoten. Norway
During my last travel to lapland I found some crazy light conditions due to persistent fog in the area. I was trying to reach a summit in Yllas-Pallastunturi national park when this fantastic situation happened in front of me
I cant explain how I reach this place for the picture. If you'd like to go repeat keep in mind this is strightly forbidden J

A warm sunset close to Dublin, at Baily lighthouse. This is a restricted and forbidden area so I decided to arrive here along the coast and then climbing the cliffs. It has been a great adventure and everytime im more happy when I come back with an unusual shot.
This shot is from my last travel in Faroe Islands. In this trip I tried to discover less known villages, not iconic landscapes, meeting people and stories. im now finishing to merge all together in an article I will publish very soon.
I invite you to read this article I wrote for Manfrotto School of Xperience in which I talk about my experience of living photography in travel with my family!
http://www.manfrottoschoolofxcellence.com/it/2017/08/un-fotografo-a-copenhagen-con-famiglia/
In the Faroes everything is wet! You can meet some rain every day, you can find waterfalls everywhere, its better if you don't choose for a picnic in a meadow. Clouds are everywhere and everyday, but if you are lucky you can also spot some great sunsets. I will finally come back!
Someone prefer winter to summer. Im one of them and Im used to get butterflies in my stomach when I look back at my photos of Scandinavia. This evening Id like to show you monumental trees of Lapland bowed down after a bumper snowfall. What a wonderland !
Imagine a handful of islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and imagine to be on his northernmost island waiting on the rainstorm to pass. 350 inhabitants of the settlement are sleeping in Viðareiði , cause is exactly 3 o'clock, the right time for summer golden light. The church is my stage when a flash of light comes from the sea and hit the ampitheather of peaks all around me. I stop dreaming, its time to photograph and admire a Føroya unique red rainbow.
You can have a look to one of the darkest moment of the Faroes Islands during summertime. Driving around the green landscapes we stopped for a funny light trail in front of Eidi church in rugged Eysturoy.
A photo from the last long night... 6 hours of incredible color in the sky that let me hike to three different locations here in the Faroes
Sunrise is very early in summer in nordic countries, but maybe is better not to sleep and go out like a zombie to get some colors. This one is from the most famous canal of Copenaghen
Colorful fields of tulips in bloom during sunrise, Noord-Holland region, The Netherlands
The orange sky at sunset frame the frozen sea and typical Rorbu immersed in the snow, Lyngen alps, Norway
Every time I admire northern lights it looks like to be the first time. To feel like a baby, in front of these spectacles, is absolutely normal. Last winter given me incredible moments, with 10/10 nights with spots of aurora in the sky between Lyngen, Tromsoe, Senja, Abisko and Finnish lapland. 6000 km of pure green emotions.
Feel free to contact me if you are interested to join my photo tour in 2017.

When for the first time I saw the enormous sculptures of snow, I strapped on snowshoes and I ventured through the Lappi hills. The coating transforms everything, nature is misshapen, something unbelivable.
Everytime i go out in the wild i ask myself what is the motivation that drive my passion. Photography is something special, sometimes i cant give an explanation to an adventure. Maybe cause we are Nature. Respect Nature.
Lappi, Finland.
A breathtaking view of Prague with iconic bridges over Vltava river. Moon just rised at the horizon.

The bay of Reine after a snowstorm. Lofoten, Norway
This is finally my favourite shot from the photo travel I lead this autumn in the beautiful Bavaria. I tried to find out a different view of the famous Neuschwanstein castle from a crazy position. Dont do this at home :D
One of the things to do when in Norway is, for sure, a visit to Tungeneset in Senja. A breath of fresh air with a breathtaking view in front of Devil's Theet mountains is a valid reason to spent some days in Senja peninsula.
Some places are perfect for a visit, some other are to discover and shoot. Dont stop at the postcard when you are there as a photographer.
This is exactly what I experienced behind me during the sunset of 19th of September in Sant'Andrea, Apulia. It was raining a lot and I was scared by lightning, but that rainbow and the colors were too much to stay in the car waiting for a little calm. This is the epic result of 3 merged pano shots with Canon TS-E 17mm.
Waiting winter to come back to Senja photographing the unique panorama of viewing platform over the fjord of Bergsbotn. Also abnormal climate can be a nice opportunity as in this case with a focus stacking shot at sunset.
Everytime I come back to Stetind it looks like to be there for the first time. You cant see him until you get out from the tunnel road and you turn back facing his majesty. Last summer my goal was to find out a different point of view, so I ascent through trees and one-meter high ferns, without any trace, until the forest that swallowed me ended and a granite terrace gave me this beautiful sight during midnight sun light.
I propose today a little bit special shot, I found it in the amazing beach of Skagsanden, in the western part of Lofoten islands, next to Ramberg. The orange light at the horizon comes from midnight sun, but weather was changing, as usual in the arctic! Hope you enjoy this one :D
A sunrise light on the fjord of Bergsbotn in Senja, a place i really love and where i will be back this winter when on the way to Tromsoe and Lyngen Alps. Hope to admire this light, this mountains, this snow!

Someone asked me if I prefer Norway, and specifically Lofoten, during winter or summertime. A difficult question, in both cases a particular light that accompanies our journeys in the arctic. Maybe summer is perfect if you want to join nature and then spent some adventures on a trekking or climbing up some mountain, winter is unique for the magic extra-time of the long arctic nights, just avoid any problems with cold and sudden storms.
Carrasqueira, a riverside village, located in the middle of Natural Reserve of Sado Estuary. This village has preserved a masterpiece of popular architecture and is a perfect location for landscape photographer. Just study the correct tide and wait for a great sunrise/sunset there !
This is the summer light I admired in Lofoten in late June, the darker moment of the day, just a couple of hours after midnight. Sometimes I took shots i never imagined, as a landscaper is normally for me they are taken with a telelens. I think this is a sort of new shot from Lofoten, what do you think about it?
A midnight shot from my recent arctic trip to Norway. Stetinden, legendary National Mountain, photographed from the river next to the main parking area. I tried this shot last winter but unfortunately no aurora appeared, now i was back for the dreamed summer shot. Hope to finish my job next winter :D
Just back from a trekking travel to Norway I enjoyed a lot the incredible light of summer in the Arctic. In this shot a low light from midnight sun hits the flowers behind me before reaching the Volanstinden mountain in Fredvang.
The fiery sky at sunset is reflected on the ocean waves and cliffs at Praia da Ursa Cabo da Roca, Portugal
A shot from Sakrisøy, a beautiful sea village between Hamnoy and Reine, in Lofoten islands. With these colors start the long sunrise that accompany photographers to sunset, allways with a nice light during November/February months.
Skagsanden, a few metres from Flakstad and Ramberg, is definitely my favourite beach of the archipelago. Next month i will be back for a trekking photo travel, maybe having a look to the beach from a peak.
They are hidden everywhere, watching us :D
With its 17.2 km of road Vasco da Gama is the longest bridge in Europe but only the 9th in the world. Not far from the new Expo area of Lisbon, is the perfect location for a sunrise if you plan to visit the capital of Portugal.
A shocking sunset prompted me entering in the fresh ocean to catch this one!
Just back home from Clickalps spring photo travel in Portugal. Great journeys over there, incredible weather conditions: dark skies, rainy days and, of course, beautiful sunsets/sunrises.

The Alster is a big attraction for Hamburg's visitors. Reflecting beautiful buildings during sunset is a must which give the photo a special charm.
A wonderful snowy day in Hamnoy, Lofoten Islands, Norway.
There is a unique gamut of colors on a arctic sunrise, something you will never see anywhere!
Nice condition in Reine during twilight helped me to realize this panorama.

Great snow conditions in Reine bay some days ago. Sunrise is coming over Sakrisoya.
A shot from my actual trip in Norway. Some days ago I took this during a cold and clear night in Reine. No aurora that night but starry sky on a lovely place!
Waiting for the right light in Ramberg, under an incoming winter storm. Lofoten, Norway
Blue hour, lights, long exposure, reflections... my favorite ingredients during cityscapes occasions.
Northern Lights illuminate sky and the snowy peaks. Flakstad, Norway.
Oia is one the most beautiful village of Greece and of Mediterranean sea as well. Located in the northern part of Santorini, lies on a long promontory formed originally by a volcanic explosion, one of the strongest in history. Blue-domed churches, winding streets and white houses where everything seem suspended in time.
One of my favourite town spots in Lofoten is the red house of Henningsvaer. Every photo travel I come back there for a shot.
The "vast place", Nama original name for Namib desert, seen from the sky during a Cessna tour trip from Sesriem to the sea.
The pink sky at sunrise illuminates Reine village with its cold sea and the snowy peaks. Lofoten Islands, Northern Norway, Europe.
Halfway between Albufeira and Portimão, Carvoeiro is the most beautiful town I experienced in my recent trip to Portugal. In this shot I waited for blue hour to capture the small beach, surrounded by a cleft of cliffs, with the picturesque Algarve's village.
You can easily take a walk around his cliffs and hilly pathways to experience some amazing views along the coastline.
If you wanna admire the sea climb on top, on its cliffs, let you caress by the suspended sunrise light, close your eyes and think. The breeze of dawn has secrets to tell you. Remember that this is a magic moment, where anything can happen.
Ponta da Piedade, Lagos. Algarve Portugal.
This shot comes from my recent photo reportage in Portugal.
As every morning I wake up very early, driving very fast trying to reach Vasco da Gama bridge for the sunrise.
Vasco Rossi's song "Vado al Massimo" was blaring in my car, but this was not enough! Unfortunately I didn't calculate very well the distance between Sintra and Lisboa, so I could take just one shot before the magical colors ends behind me.
I imagine there must be a place where the world starts (or maybe ends !).
I think this place could be one of these, is not far from the cliffs of Cabo da Roca, in Portugal. The wind blows very angry, and, I cling to the strange vegetation that juts out on the vastness of the sea. A long exposure is perfect to catch this moment at sunrise.
This is a complete Selfie of my family taken my recent trip to Portugal. Here in the cave of Benagil, Algarve.
Thanks to my wife for supporting me and to my childs, perfect baby travellers!
Not far from Lisbon and close to the famous Sintra there is a small paradise hold on in the rocks: Azenhas do Mar.
Here the cliffs try to defend themself by the incessant puffs from the ocean, just expect the show of the sunset on the stairs that takes tourists to the beach.
Along the Sado estuary, near Setubal in Portugal, you can found a unique fishing village where to spent a beautiful sunset, playing with the camera along the unreal piers.
This Alentejo's region location looks like the end of the world, just consider to be there with high tide and hope to find a day with no hard wind.
A bridge over the cold sea connects a typical fishing village. Lofoten Islands, Northern Norway, Europe.

Flakstad. Lofoten Islands, Northern Norway, Europe.
It's February in Svollvaer, days are getting longer and offer to the arctic landscape unbelivable colors, from pink to red and violet.
The archipelago offers to winter photographers a unique feeling, something you can try with me also next January in my workshop! Just ask...
The classic view from Westminster Bridge in London. River Thames and Big Ben Tower with the moon during the blue hour.
Yes, this is one of my favourite scandinavian house, everytime i travel to Lofoten I come back for a shot. Do you like it?
When photographing to iconic cityscapes I try to compensate for the lack of interest by a "Déjà vu shot" with interesting composition, nice colors and movement as well. I hope you will like my version of the double Double-Decker Bus in London!
Everytime I visit Antigua I come back to the scenic and dangerous Devil's Bridge. A place where the sea roars so perfect for a photographer. Fix a correct shutter speed is essential because we dont have much shooting possibilities... it's impossible to save camera and filters from the incoming waves... this year I have my shot, now I can go back home to wash everything from salt!
Finally back with the first landscape shot from my actually reportage travel in Caribbean. This is the yesterday sunset from the scenic Ffryes beach in Antigua and Barbuda island.
I missed the lightning at the horizon and was not possible to include the rainbow, unlucky behind me!
Last light goes on, timidly, the clouds floating over the sea, as if to announce a long series of snowstorms over Lofoten. So, me and my workshop group we hasten to capture all the riot of colors mirrored in the beach that the norwegian twilight spreads in front of us
Photography is my passion but what drives me to travel all around the world is the insatiable desire to try new emotions. This can be something of very simple, a love for Nature that makes me completely surprised in front of a coloured blooming, a windmill and a leaden sky.
There is a moment during the winter arctic day where a traveller can admire the incredible variation of colors in the sky. Sunset looks like to be infinite so you have the time to choose appropriate POV to realize the shot you dreamed.
In this case I decided to go far from the classic Lofoten beaches and realize a shot on the famous town of Svollvaer. Just find out a new point of view if you want a new vision of the city.
This is one of the shots I don't give up when I come back to Reine. I love this view from the port, for me is like living a dream during the time I spent here waiting for the sunrise. Winter twilight in Norway is every time a great opportunity for a landscape photographer.
Let me show you a different shot from Norway, with a beautiful full moon which gives you a warm feeling in a very cold twilight over the Lyngedal lagoon.
I am amazed by the sunburst over the moon even though i used a 30 seconds exposure. I think that Canon 16-35 f2,8 is perfect for this effect.
This year I found Utakleiv one of the most scenic Lofoten beaches, in dreamy conditions. It's a cold and windy sunrise, after three days of intense snowstorm, and the result of the weather is everywhere all around me, it's just what a photographer would like to experience on a winter tour!
A soft alpenglow embraces the Gymsøya mountains in the central part of Lofoten islands. The golden hour is particularly long in January thanks to the few hour of daylights in the area of the Polar Arctic Circle.
I am waiting for the sunrise in the heart of Colmar (France), the colourful houses lined up on the sides of the Lauch river reminds the italian city of Venice. All around me just silence, but in a couple of hours, thousands of people will come to experience the famous and scenics Christmas markets.
A super long exposure from the bridge of Svollvaer, a classic view at sunset with the colors of Lee Coral GND filter.
Lofoten islands are a perfect place to enjoy the passion for ptohography, the most interesting aspect is that you can shoot in all the lighting situations (but also with dark), the right condition is just a question of having some ideas. I hope you will find some hour for sleeping!
The iconic view of Lofoten from Reine bridge, or better, down from the sea level. It was a coloured sunrise over the Reine bay and I decided for a long exposure using a little stopper.
Whenever I go to Norway, coming back home I feel a little lost when, in the night, looking to the dark sky I realize that the green magician can't happen. This is why, everytime, I want to live a new experience in the vast north!
The Albula line, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, is a mountain railway passing through very interesting landscapes, rich of artworks of engineering, including for example the famous Landwasser Viaduct. The Albula line, with the neighboring Bernina line, was entered in 2008 in the list of UNESCO as examples of technically advanced management of the landscape in high mountains and narrow-gauge railways as the most spectacular in the world. The line is crossed by regional trains and the prestigious Bernina Express, an express train in the tourist service from Tirano to Chur.
When choosing a location for a tilt-shift effect, remember you must give the impression of a Lilliput situation. For a miniature models find out an elevated viewpoint with houses, roads, people, trees... every small subject will be enhanced if you use a wide angle, for example a Canon TSE 17mm or 24mm as well.
Catching the light in the middle of absolute nowhere! Haukland beach, Lofoten islands before the snowstorm. Nordland, Norway.
Since before leaving Italy I had in mind this cityscape in the city of Svollvaer, Lofoten. This view is the classic from the port but the difference, beetwen the touristic shot and this one, is staying in a raised position used for the frame. It has been really fun negotiating with the Sir of the second floor... but finally, after some minutes of persuasive debate, he let me enter in his luxury apartment and allowed me to use his very photographic terrace! Down at the bridge my colleagues of photo travel have enjoyed that situation, between laughs and amazement.
I took this shot 3 days ago during the actually photo workshop in Norway. I was preparing my dinner when a KP6 waked me up! I instantly went out forgetting my italian pasta in the kitchen. Its a composed panorama, taken with Zeiss Distagon T* 15mm, 6 shots, 6 seconds each. It has been a difficult stitching but I hope you'll enjoy this result.

La Petite Venise (Little Venice) is the Colmar area crossed by canals over the river Lauch. The neighborhood is picturesque and full of charming, perfect starting point for a romantic visit, perhaps with the typical "bateau".
The cityscape of the old-town Colmar is homogenous and renowned among tourists. This city is very crowded during the Christmas period together with the other famous villages along the "Alsace wine route".
I choose this photo to wish you Merry Christmas.
I took this some days ago in Colmar, it was very difficult to take pictures in a such crowded town during the famous Christmas markets in Alsace, France.
So i decided to take a long exposure from an elevated position, asking Santa Claus not to move for 10 seconds!
The weather in Holland is suited to tulip growing, with cool springs just as they begin to bloom. From mid-March to the end of May the tulips transform large parts of Holland into a colorful patchwork. No matter where you look, the fields will be different but no doubt gorgeously colorful.
I would have liked to call this shot "Mare Tranquillitatis" in honour of the most famous location of the moon, where the first manned landing occured on the summer of '69!
I sometimes wonder if we really have visited and enjoyed enough places on our Planet... and of course if there will be a day when we will visit new horizons.
A lucky situation occured during my '13 trip to Norway. After some days of heavy snowfall I met a nice light during a cold morning in Henningsvaer.
The Lofoten Islands have been recently targeted by a large number of photographers all around the world. They are so vast and interesting that a proper research, before the trip, can afford to come ready in alternative locations if Nature decide to reward us with the so pleasing warm light.
Rain, snow, storm, wind...
All of these ingredients are Rock'n'Roll for my vision of photography.

The weather was very bad during my trip to South Dakota but has let me to take this great picture with a majestic rainbow at the Cedar Pass.
There is something in the Arctic lands that I can't unfortunately explain.
Normally with a picture I can freeze a moment forever, but it's impossible for me to describe a situation that persists and moves to infinity.
I can't explain the bitter cold of the arctic night painted in shades of green and red, impossible to tell how the dark night stretches out over the long twilight. Finally, how can I show you a blue hour that slowly reclines on its way to meet the endless dawn? Please try it once in your life.
I love Norway, I know that around every corner there is a glimpse waiting for me. Lofoten are perhaps the most amazing place in Norway for a landscape photographer, but if I can give you some advice, please go in Troms region and you will surely find bread for your camera too!
Usually, when I travel, I start with scheduling it many months before the effective departure. Is very important to study everything about the area: the correct moment, the most interesting location, how the light affects in the scene and many other things. The most beautiful feature while on the road, however, becomes that sense of discovery when you're finally face to face with all that we previously prepared at home, discover and surprising ourselves with something of new that we havent dreamed before.
It's March in Norway, I am travelling in the Troms region searching for some interesting view where to spend the night waiting for the northern lights. I found a very nice panorama in the Lyngen alps, where Storfjorden is going to its end at Oteren.

An outstanding sunrise was waiting for me when I got up on that cold Norwegian morning in Orland (Brekstad), Trondelag region.
This is a rare case of post-production in which I had to strongly desaturate colors that the camera captured that day!
Holland is mostly situated below sea level but the Dutch are very innovative when it comes to keeping the water at bay. The Dutch don’t notice any of this and that is thanks to modern systems that keeps the seawater level from flooding the land.
But in the past years the windmills were very important to prevent flooding of the land. One of the best conserved windmills in the world are in Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a unique collection of 19 authentic windmills. They are with no doubt a Dutch icon throughout the entire world.
In this shot I wanted to represent many of the beauties of Holland: the orange of his flag, its fields with carpets of tulips, the windmill, the endless skies. The shot is realized with a long exposure of 4 minutes during a day with a very gray sky!

For this scene I decided to create an original view than the classic front view on the tulips field. I was intrigued by the color of the channel at the first lights of day, reflecting a silvery color very interesting for me. Finally, the passage of the sheeps, is my signature to this shot mixed with a geometrical texture played by the successions of these natural lines that converge towards the horizon.
I am just Just back from Holland where I found some beautiful situations all over the country. This shot is what I dreamed in my mind before leaving Italy. I used a wide angle with a f-stop of 20 for this sunburst effect... and for the composition go down, really close to the ground, and you will enjoy a nice view of the tulips.
A shot from my recent winter travel to Trondelag region in Norway.
I was in Trondheim, on the banks of the river that crosses the city, in front of me some nice and old Bakklandet storehouse. I tried to add some interesting items in the photo, first of all I included the balcony and then I used a very long exposure... 363 seconds.

Netherlands is the country of bicycles for excellence and of course also in Amsterdam the two wheels are very popular. In fact you could say that no city in the world can boast such a high number of cyclists, just consider that about 40% of all citizens' movements are made by bicycle. No transport allows you to move so freely through the streets and bridges of the center like the bike, and, if you walk around the city on foot, beware of the bells ringing: you're probably blocking a bike lane!
Bolivia, Laguna Vierde and the Volcanos Llicancabur & Juriques in the South Lipez region.
Last time I visited Amsterdam was in 2010. I remember very cold and windy days, with no sunlight at all. But in these situations a travel photographer must obtain in any case some good photo and this has happened
I walked around the city as long as I've found out a very interesting point of view, it was later sunset time and there was an incredible light, a mixture of clouds and light pollution, this is the result. I hope you'll enjoy.
I am not here for landscaping, today my goal is some beautiful reportage shot to my customers fishing on the ice at the Limingen lake, not far from the border of Børgefjell National Park in Norway.
Just one shot to the ice and then we can start our daily job.
The Wiesener Viadukt is a single track limestone railway viaduct situated near the famous alpine village of Davos.
It spans the Landwasser River, in the Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. This breathtaking engineering work was was built between 1906 and 1909 and now, the Rhaetian Railway, is still used for the famous Bernina Express Unesco train.
I took this photo after a snowfall from a very dangerous and slippery slope... so a few photographers will be able to copy this postcard
Behind the veil of each night, there is a smilling dawn (Kahlil Gibran).
Sometimes, when I'm immersed in landscape photography, I feel a little painter. So, a day in Antigua happened, between light and dark, to realize this funny frame.
Just nature and camera, with no photoshop at all!
It may look strange to walk on a frozen mirror of 1,447-square-kilometre (559 sq mi) into an inaccessible and undeveloped national park in Norway.
It's January, the cold is reaching its peak, near -30 °C, something of unbelievable is coming true in the region of Nord-Trøndelag, near the border to Sweden.
Bubbles of ice from the deep backdrop remained trapped in the icy waters creating a sort of highways of ice plunge into the gentle slopes of the park.
The first sun is coming, it's time to fix the tripod and having fun!

I took this shot in Trondheim. It was apparently hard to realize some nice shots in that cloudy day of January. But I felt that the charm of the water could give me a glimpse to remember once again. So I went where Nidelva flows through Trondheim with old Bakklandet storehouses which flanking both sides of this river and I realized this shot early in the morning. Blocks of ice and the wind designed an interesting surface on the water.
Every season has its charm, it is important to know how to wear his colors with ease.

Bernina Express is a panoramic train on the railway line of Albula/Bernina. Leaving from the city of Tirano (italy) however is almost entirely in the territory of the Swiss canton of Graubünden.
It's a great idea to spent a day sitting inside of its comfortable coaches to discover some of the most beautiful spots of the Alps.
I follow this train as a photographer and landscapes lover from more than 10 years. I love his red presence that paints the mountain's landscape in every season and every time is a pleasure for me to discover a new place in which it runs its route. As here, for example, at the Landwasser Viadukt, near the small town of Filisur.

There is a place in Antigua that for a photographer is more fascinating than the 365 Caribbean beaches of the island. The name suggests us that we are into the wild: Devils Bridge!
Here the rough rock is trying from thousands of years to hold on to the land, but the ocean roars of anger would like to swallow this stretch of coast that looks straight into the eyes of the Old World.
On Christmas Day the Nature made me a gift with the only interesting sunset of my trip to Caribbean. Already an hour before sunset the sky seemed to be ready for the highlight so I rushed to one of the most beautiful beaches in Antigua, Frryers (the beach of Antiguan people!).
With this picture I hope to show you a little of the emotion I have tried during this very exciting Christmas show.
Even the sea has its rocks... so I feel like I'm among my mountains.
In this shot I included photogenics Rorbu of Hamnoy near Reine, in the southern part of Lofoten islands. The photography plays on soft colors, the recent snowfall in the small fishing village is interesting and we can admire the contrast between houses and the impressive peaks in the background.
For a landscape photographer a colorful sunset is a great opportunity, a moment we would always like to assist, especially if we are in a wild and photogenic location.
But, If we have too many clouds disturbing the descent of the sun towards the horizon? Let's try increasing the exposure and creating images that may seem new forms of art.
In this photo for example I decided even to exaggerate, with eight minutes of shooting in B pose during daylight. The scene acquires charm and the uncommon effect increases the attractiveness of the photographed area.

I made this shot while traveling to Botswana and Namibia, although in reality in this shot I was on the Zimbabwe side of the Victoria Falls.
An excursion which cost me my poor 5D Canon Camera. It stopped working because of the water that enveloped me copious from every direction. Well, you had my advice but, if you want the same challenge of having a picture in any case, I can also recommend you the waterfalls of Yosemite in the month of May, another place where I left a camera body! Sigh...
An unforgettable sunset from Capo Testa (Santa Teresa di Gallura, Sardinia), the result of a sudden change of weather conditions and a strong mistral wind. Among the most intense ever seen in my life. Look at the rocks in the central part of the shot... don't they look like a smoking volcano?
The most desolated places in the world are extraordinarily fascinating.
Namib, a seemingly inhospitable desert, teems with life and some of his sceneries, perhaps taken from above, leave me wide-mouthed every time I go back on my hard disk looking for that shot!
During my travel to Norway I was looking for bad weather situation to try to capture the solitude of the seascapes in winter. In this case I used a long exposure in the beach of Ramberg, near Reine, necessary to capture the waves movement on the foreground. In the background the snowy landscape of the Lofoten Islands.
I consider this shot as a photo stolen to destiny.
Sometimes you can take pictures without having studied it before, they come from the case, this may have some imperfections, but in the reportage photography there is a moment and a condition to transmit, not necessarily with a perfect form.
I was walking outside Amsterdam, looking for a chance to explain the exceptional cold that blocked even the navigation in his famous canals. I was waiting for some better weather conditions, when suddenly a opportunity happened in front of me.
I was loosing hopes and instead in a minute my photographic journey was satisfied.
Thanks to Harleem iced canal and the birds.
In this shot I was climbing the highest peak of the salar de Uyuni, Tunupa volcano (Bolivia). The environment is unique and singular with the red rocks typical of volcanic areas. Here we are at 5000 meters, but there is still a lot to the top!
During my second travel to Namibia I experienced the flying tour over Namibia’s most spectacular scenic wonders. I took the flight at Swakopmund airport, in the heart of Namib desert. The aereal flight starts over the Kuiseb River bed and continues on towards Sesriem and the Sesriem Canyon, then to the highest sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei. These towering dunes are breathtaking, I think that Sossusvlei area is one of the most beautiful place I ever seen in the world.
After this area we fly over the Diamond Restricted Area and over the coastline where I took this shot. If you travel to Namibia dont forget to have this daily tour that offers spectacular views and excellent photographic opportunities.

Tonight the landscape is green and from the snow-covered peak rises a green cloud. It's a friendly smog!
Aurora borealis in the Tromsoe region, Norway.
Delicate Arch is one of the natural wonders of the world, maybe a location to visit one time in life. You can see it also along the road when you travel to States... is the symbol of the Utah plate!
But when I was there I didn't want the classic frontal shot, I wanted to find out a new visual, as I normally do when I shoot in my beloved alps.
So I ventured through the red sandstone formations searching for my personal point of view and this is my results... have you already seen it from here?
Carpe Diem. There are moments where a little thing can make a difference in a shot. As in this case, with a photogenic boat that passes in front of a marvelous dawn in the bay of Henningsvaer in Lofoten archipelago, Norway.

Henningsvær is one of the most famous tourist resorts of the Lofoten Islands in Norway. The small harbor, located south of the archipelago, was built on a group of small islands at the foot of a cliff overlooking the sea.
The channel in the picture, known as Heimsundet, is an open neck of water built againts the adverse weather conditions that may occur in the harbour.
During my travel to Chile & Bolivia I visited many lagoons in the Andes. They are normally located in altitudes next to 4000 meters and from the land many perfect volcanos towering to the sky.
I think the most beautiful place I visited was the Miscanti y Miñiques lagoons, four lagoons that arise in the middle of a magical natural landscape, surrounded by mountains. These lakes have a particular form of heart and deep blue waters. I was there in winter, wind and cold was too much for a pic-nic!
The Northern Light is not only the magical dance of the green music in the night sky, there is something more to be admired and this light starts early in the morning.
I was in Lofoten from five days but I haven't had yet the chance to see the light of the sun. When I got up from my Rorbu bed in Henningsvaer (the Venice of the north) and I saw the sky, I thought it was a mirage!
Keep writing would be superfluous...

Henningsvær is a fishing village in the Lofoten archipelago. It is located 20 kilometres from the town of Svollvaer on several small islands connected with many bridges to the land. This village is one of the most beautiful in Lofoten and thanks to its channels and water is called "The Venice of the North".

The sun is the author!
Thanks to its charged particles if we can admire the bright dancing lights known as aurora or northern lights. These lights are seen above the magnetic poles but exactly best seen in an irregularly shaped oval centred over each magnetic pole.
Auroral displays appear in many colours, green and pink are more common. Variations are due to the type of gas particles that are colliding with atmosphere, this process occurs about 60 miles above the earth. Red auroras, that can reach lower latitudes, are reported to be located up to 200 miles from earth.
The lights appear in many forms in incredibles spectacles.
Some studies explain a connection between the Northern Lights and sunspot activity, well known as 'solar wind'. Researchers have discovered that auroral activity is cyclic, peaking roughly every 11 years. 2013 was at the top of this cycle.
Areas that are not subject to 'light pollution" are the best places to watch for the lights. The long periods of darkness and the frequency of clear nights provide many good opportunities to watch the auroral displays, so winter of 2013 was the right year!

Rorbu is a traditional type of seasonal house used by fishermen, but very useful also to include in a scenic photo! The buildings are built on land, but with the one end on poles in the water. They are very common in all the coasts of Norway and very diffuse on Lofoten. The original use of rorbu for fishing has diminished and now Its use has become a living-house for tourists.

The old church of Flakstad viewed over in silence the blue hour of the Nordland region in Lofoten. This is one of the most photographic location I found during my trip to Norway, but for a good shot I think is necessary to find out them during a particular moment. In my shot, for example, I was lucky to find them with a "gritty" sky or, maybe, why not trying with a coloured sunset? Maybe next time I will come back here I will look for some northern lights over the church, with some green and I will put my final sign to this postcard.
Reine is the most attractive location in the Lofoten Islands, Norway. The natural environment in which it stands, nestled between mountains and sea, is a delight for a Nature lover. As a landscape photographer I was very lucky to visit it during a snowstorm. So, I waited for a moment of calm, and then I took this picture during blue hour, one of the moments of light I love much.
Desert is just like an artist, every day with a sleight of hand can recreate its landscape, moving at will with a stroke of brush. Its silent visitors can admire its forms and its changing colorsfixing them forever in memory.

This shot was taken during a flight on a Cessna coming from the desert of Namibia. I flew along the coast to the border between land and sea having breathtaking view that I will never forget!

Lofoten is an archipelago (although known with the name of “Lofoten islands”) in the county of Nordland in Norway.
They are surely famous for their breathtaking views between mountains and sea, but one of the factors that make them famous in the world is the exportation of stockfish thanks to the numerous cod fisheries. Expecially in winter, travelling through the fjords, will be easier to meet the dried cod rather than people.
Often, this show, is even enhanced by the presence of the Fox's Tail in the sky.
(This is a double exposure shot)
Nusfjord is one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved fishing village in Lofoten, protected from UNESCO since 1975.
I visited this village during a snowy winter season and in this shot I have succeeded very well to transmit this atmospheric situation.
No people or turists where there that day and it seemed to live in a ghost town. In the past this location was an important place of manufacture of cod on an industrial scale.

In this shot I tried to play with the cool tones I found in that moment at Flakstad. The sky of the Nordland, in Lofoten Islands (Norway), was very stormy and this house was the perfect subject for my composition.
In this shot, from the Lofoten Islands in Norway, I tried to use in my favor a very bad and difficult weather situation. I am immersed in the sea with my legs up to the thigh and while I was trying to fight with the stability of the tripod I have been assailed by continuous tumultuous waves. Due to this, I care a lot for this shot and I also tried to rediscover one of the most remote and secret location of Lofoten, the beach of Unstad.

PHOTO OF THE DAY IN EARTHSHOTS: http://www.earthshots.org/2013/03/secret-lofoten-by-roberto-moiola/
When shooting at the landscape we must keep in mind some factors of success: a good light in the scene (better if you shoot at sunrise or sunset), find out a very interesting scenery, go to that place after studying the proper season, good equipment and appropriate filters. After these notes I want to focus on the concept of hyperfocal, an important factor that determines the success of your photos.
So you will just need to focus your lens at the hyperfocal distance and everything in the photograph from some near distance to infinity will be sharp. There are many software and online guides for this topic, spend some of your time in this and your time will be well spent.
Located in the Troms region, along the Norwegian fjords, the small town of Svensby is a good place to wait for an auroral storm. Just wait for a good geomagnetic activity and then choose from shooting to the sea or to the mountains, the Lyngen Alps.
I normally check out the KP index prediction, I can know if there is a good chance to see aurora. This index determines the global geomagnetic storm in a scale from 0 to 9. The higher the Kp climbs, the closer the lines move towards the equator.
Laguna Colorada is a shallow salt lake in Bolivia, located in the famous plateau in the South Region Lopez. The whole area is photogenic, but this lake in particular thanks to the contrasting colors on its surface. Red is caused by red sediments and pigmentation of some algae. Remember we are at 4200 meters, so it is best to go with a good train that goes in the high altitudes and gear up for the cold!
The volcano Sajama is the highest peak of Bolivia. This picture is taken from the Sajama National Park where is located the small village of Sajama, excellent base for climbers who want to acclimatise before making the climb. One of the most recent and unusual events related to this mountain occurs in August 2001, when two local football teams played a soccer match on top of Mount Sajama (the objective was to protest against a FIFA decision).
I am travelling along the dusty roads of southern Namibia early in the morning when I suddenly come across with what I'm looking for, a beautiful forest of kookerboom standing out as big skeletons in the landscape that anticipates the Kalahari Desert. The quiver tree or "Kokerboom" is one of the most interesting and characteristic plants of the very hot and dry parts of southern Namibia.
Every day a new emotion in this country!
I have travelled a lot, both with my body and my mind, and what surprises me most is that I still wonder at how the world is fascinating... as in this photo taken in Bolivia, where my dream keeps going on.

Salar de Uyuni is one of the Natural Wonders of South America. It is located in the Bolivian Altiplano, an impressive high plateau, surrounded by the highest Andes mountains and volcanoes. This incredible salt flat, the largest in the world, joining to its clear skies left me stunned ever since the first visual impact.
Chobe National Park is famous for its large population of elephants, the highest concentration in Africa and on Earth with over 120,000 surviving individuals. I was waiting for the sunset, ready in a frontal position, when what I had long been dreaming of took place: a herd of elephants crossing just at the right point!
Laguna Chaxa, in the Los Flamencos National Reserve, is an attraction inside the Chilean area of Atacama Desert. The colourful Chilean flamingos populate this salt flat area south of San Pedro de Atacama, in the middle of the Andes. I decided for the sunset and this silhouette situation instead of a classic pink shot of this beautiful animals. Large volcanoes dominate the landscape and fit perfectly in these shots at sunset and sunrise.
There are 46 degrees today in Agra, every action is complicated in such a hot and humid environment. I go off to the Indian roads in search of a different point of view on one of the wonders of the modern world that is the Taj Mahal. And it is sunset when I find the right end of a roof, next to a group of kids playing happily with kites. INCREDIBLE INDIA!
In the Urubamba Valley, not far from the city of Cusco, there are the famous "salt works" near the village of Maras. In the salt pans, local workers extract day after day bags of salt targeting to the Peruvian market. The spectacular terrain and the peculiarities of the place gave me the opportunity to make this shot in 2007 during my trekking from Cusco to Machu Picchu. I waited before taking the passage of this guy so that his shape corresponded with one of the pools of salt.

An intense and sudden cold accompanies my journey through the lowlands of Holland. Moving from Amsterdam to nearby Haarlem and looking for some interesting insight, I find it in one of the channels that branches off from the river Spaarne towards the centre of the picturesque town. The ice that grips the channel enables me to frame a mirror of the houses in a perfect Northern home-style.
Badlands are one of America's most spectacular parks I have ever had the opportunity to visit. Hence the concept of the wild can be found on the corner of these wide-open spaces of South Dakota. In this shot I waited until the last light of the sun before the arrival of a lightning storm, creating a pleasant effect between the foreground and the gray sky.
This is the fantastic place where the Namib Desert meets the sea. It is very hard to take a picture from windows of a airplane, hoping to capture nice colours. This time it was indispensable the powerful engine of the new Lightroom 4. While shooting I decided for a very short time of exposure to avoid problems caused by the Cessna's vibration.
